Let's be blunt: Dana Point has a reputation problem — the good kind. Gorgeous bluffs, manicured trails, a harbor that photographs like a screensaver. It's easy to assume that a town this tidy is a town without threats. We see the fallout of that assumption at our hospital every week. The hazards here don't announce themselves. They hide in tall grass, ride in on warm December days, and burrow into your dog's nose while you're admiring the view.

Foxtails: Our Most Underrated Menace

If you take one thing from this article, make it this: foxtails are the single most underappreciated danger for Dana Point pets. These grass seed heads — common along the Bluff trails, the trails above the beach, and any patch of unmowed open space — have barbed tips designed to burrow. Once they snag your dog's fur, they only travel one direction: in.

We've retrieved foxtails from ear canals, between toes, up nasal passages, and even, in one memorable case, lodged behind an eyelid. They don't come out on their own, and they can migrate into tissue, causing abscesses and serious infections.

Your defense: After every trail walk, run your hands through your dog's coat and check between every toe. If your dog suddenly sneezes violently, paws at an ear, or squints one eye after a hike, don't wait — those are foxtail signatures.

Fleas Don't Take a Winter Break

Here's a habit we'd love to break: pet parents who stop flea prevention from November through March. In Minnesota, sure. In Dana Point? Never. Our winters are so mild that fleas reproduce year-round — some years, our "coldest" months are peak flea season because indoor heating keeps flea eggs cozy.

Ticks are less abundant here than in the Northeast, but they exist in our coastal scrub and grasslands, and they carry diseases worth worrying about. Year-round prevention isn't paranoia. It's the baseline.

The Beach Has Teeth (and Other Issues)

Saltwater itself isn't toxic in small gulps, but a dog who gulps ocean water all afternoon can end up with serious GI upset — or worse, salt toxicity. Add in washed-up algae, sharp shells, and the occasional dead seabird carrying bacteria, and the beach becomes a buffet of small troubles.

Freshwater bowls from home, not harbor puddles. That's the rule.

Your Month-by-Month Dana Point Risk Calendar

Five-Minute Prevention Routine

  1. Year-round flea and tick prevention, every pet, every month — we can help you pick the right product (some dog products are toxic to cats, so don't guess)
  2. Post-walk coat checks, especially after any trail with tall grass
  3. Paw inspections after beach days — check pads for cracks, burns, and embedded debris
  4. Skip the tall grass on the trail edges; stay on the maintained path
  5. Fresh water on every outing so your dog isn't tempted by the ocean or shared bowls

When Something Seems Off

Sudden sneezing fits, head shaking, a limp that appears mid-walk, a small bump that gets painful, or unexplained lethargy after an outdoor day — these are all reasons to come in sooner rather than later. Foxtails, in particular, are dramatically easier to remove on day one than day five.

We love that Dana Point gives our pets a life spent mostly outdoors. We just want your dog or cat to enjoy it with you prepared — because the prettiest places rarely post warning signs.
